RULES

The Festival consists of 2 competitive sections and 1 Out of Competition section.

The competitive sections are as follows:
• Under35 Youth Competition
• Schools Competition

In the “Young Under 35 Competition” section, female directors born before December 31, 1989 may participate.
In the “Schools Competition” section, short films made by schools, in any year, as part of the CIPS project – NATIONAL PLAN CINEMA AND IMAGES FOR SCHOOLS promoted by the Ministry of Culture – General Directorate of Cinema and Audiovisual and the Ministry of Education and Merit may participate.

Ten short films will be selected for each competitive section.

Out of Competition: given the Piccolo America Foundation’s desire to create moments of meeting between authors, cast and crew with the public, and in order to make the most of the works with the projection on the big screen, from the competitive sections “Under 35” and “Schools” some short films will have the opportunity to be selected in the non-competitive section Out of Competition.

In each section, competitive and non-competitive, short films from any nation and in any language may participate, provided that, if in a foreign language, they have Italian subtitles. All short films must have English subtitles.

The genre and theme of the short films are free. The maximum length must be 20 minutes or less (including credits). No music videos or video art works will be selected.

Only works that have been completed on or after January 1, 2023 will be accepted, except for participants in the “Schools Competition” section, who may submit works they produced at any time. Only holders of the relevant rights or individuals authorized in writing by the original holders may enter works in the Festival.

Short films may have been submitted in other festivals or online platforms at the time of entry. Each participant is allowed to submit more than one short film, as long as a single entry is made for each. Short films will be judged according to the category chosen by participants at the time of entry.

Submitted works must not contain advertising messages. Participation in the competition may be refused if the video materials are damaged or technically unable to guarantee a good public screening.

The platform will also request the short film and director’s information needed to complete the registration process.

In the event that the short film is selected, a screening copy in .mov File format (H264 or ProRes) or DCP, preferably via WeTransfer, otherwise on physical media, together with a data sheet, will be requested afterwards. Should the media be damaged or unreadable, the short film will be automatically excluded from selection. The Festival will not return any device received.

For the Young Under35 section, proof of the authors’ age will be required by submitting an ID on the Film Freeway platform. Only female directors born before December 31, 1989 will be eligible for selection.

Should the film be selected, the work will automatically be included in the Festival program, and it will not be possible to withdraw it from selection for any reason. For selected films, submission of the .mov File or DCP must be made no later than 3:00 p.m. on November 1, under penalty of exclusion from the Festival.

SELECTION

The selection of short films will be made at the sole discretion of a team of experts from the Little America Foundation.
Ten short films will be selected for each competitive section.
For the Out of Competition section, the number of selected works will be determined by the selection committee. Selection of a short film in the Out of Competition section will result in automatic exclusion from the other competitive sections – and vice versa.
Once selected, participants will be contacted by e-mail and will not be allowed to withdraw their works from the festival.
All persons who participated in the making of the selected short films will be invited to present them at the screening that will take place at Cinema Troisi.
The Festival reserves the right not to communicate with the non-selected. The Festival will send a communication only to those selected, which is why it is mandatory to include their email when registering.
